All Blacks 30 – 15 British and Irish Lions
Steve Hansen recently said in an interview that to beat the All Blacks ” you need to score more points” The Lions simply didn’t do that because they didn’t take their chances.
They had five chances and took two of them. The All Blacks had three and took all of them and the spoils.
The All Blacks just simply do the job, they execute the basics superbly and punish any team that makes mistakes. You don’t get a second chance in a game against them.
Warren Gatland’s team thought that they could sneak a win against the Kiwi’s, as they hadn’t been together for some months, but the home side who had not lost in Eden Park since 1994 had different ideas.
Former Wales Coach Steve Hansen spoke after the game sending a chill down the backs of Lions supporters saying, “The team executed the plan very, very well. It wasn’t perfect but it is only our second test for the year, and we’ll build from that. I thought Kieron Read was pretty outstanding, though he’s a bit grumpy I didn’t take him off earlier, but 75 minutes is probably not a bad night’s work for him after seven weeks holiday”
“We’ve got to make sure we give ourselves every chance to win it in Wellington, and that means preparing with no stone unturned.”
It’s going to be a difficult week for the tourists. Gatland is going to have to get his coaching team together and demand more clinical behaviour from the players. This was a strong team selection and they came up short.
He admitted after the game that there as
“no excuse in terms of the result. The All Blacks were very direct, better than us at the breakdown and we missed opportunities – all things we can fix.
“We created chances and shifted the ball pretty well. They didn’t come out and play champagne rugby, they were very direct off nine. We were looking to get the upper hand up front, but in fairness to them they got it today.”
